Why Your Text Is Flagged as AI
Whether the text is AI-generated and you want to clean it up, or it is genuinely human-written and you are getting a false positive, the causes of AI detection flags are predictable and fixable. The Anatomy of an AI Detection Flag
Every AI detection flag is produced by one or more measurable signals in your text. Understanding which signals are present in your specific case is the only way to fix the problem efficiently. Randomly rephrasing sentences without targeting the actual issue rarely changes your score significantly.
The main signals that AI detectors measure are: perplexity (how predictable each word choice is), burstiness (how varied the sentence lengths and structures are), and increasingly, Unicode character profiles (what kinds of invisible or special characters are present). A text can be flagged for one signal, all three, or any combination.

Cause 1: Uniform Sentence Length
AI language models tend to generate sentences that cluster in a narrow length range, typically between 15 and 28 words. This happens because models are trained to produce coherent, complete sentences without the interruptions, asides, and rhythm shifts that characterize natural human writing.
If you look at your text and most sentences are similar in length, you have low burstiness — a key AI signal. Human writing, even formal human writing, naturally has greater variation because thought itself is not uniform.
How to diagnose
Copy your text into a word processor and look at each sentence. Count the words. If the spread is less than 10 words between your shortest and longest sentences (e.g., all between 18 and 26 words), your burstiness is too low.
How to fix
Deliberately add some very short sentences (3–8 words) for emphasis. Let a few longer sentences run longer than usual. Break up a compound sentence. Add a one-word emphasis. "Really." That kind of variation changes your burstiness profile significantly.
Cause 2: Consistent Paragraph Structure
Beyond sentence length, AI text often follows a predictable paragraph template: topic sentence, two or three supporting sentences, concluding sentence. Every paragraph follows this pattern without variation. Human writers use different paragraph types — transitional paragraphs (sometimes just one sentence), question paragraphs, list-style paragraphs, and long discursive paragraphs that develop a single idea over many sentences.
When every paragraph in your text has the same structure and similar word count, detectors register this as AI-like. The fix is structural variety at the paragraph level, not just the sentence level.
Paragraph variety techniques

Cause 3: Unicode Artifacts and Invisible Characters
This is the cause that surprises most people. Text can be flagged as AI-generated not because of how it reads, but because of invisible characters embedded within it. When you copy text from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or even from some web pages, you may be copying hidden Unicode characters that travel with the visible text.
These include zero-width spaces (U+200B), zero-width non-joiners (U+200C), soft hyphens (U+00AD), byte-order marks (U+FEFF), and directional formatting characters. They are completely invisible in standard editors and word processors, but detectors that scan Unicode profiles will find them.

Cause 4: High-Frequency AI Vocabulary Patterns

- Make the point directly without the preamble: just say the thing rather than "it is worth noting that..."
- Use "use" instead of "utilize" or "leverage"
- Replace vague adjectives with specific descriptions
- Start from the specific rather than the general
Cause 5: Lack of Personal Voice or Perspective
AI-generated text is often described as "generic" because it is — it is the average of a vast training corpus, which produces text that sounds authoritative but has no specific perspective, personal experience, or stake in the argument. Detectors pick up on this as a signal: the absence of individualism.
Adding genuine personal perspective, first-person observations, or specific examples from your own experience increases the uniqueness of your text. These are things that AI cannot generate authentically, and their presence shifts your text away from the AI-like average distribution.
This does not mean every article needs to be a personal essay. Even technical content benefits from specific examples, concrete observations, or an acknowledged limitation based on experience. "In my testing of five different tools, I found that..." is something no AI could have written based on your actual testing.
Cause 6: Predictable Argument Progression
AI text tends to structure arguments in highly predictable ways: define the concept, explain why it matters, give three examples, conclude that action is needed. This three-part example structure and the "sandwich" paragraph pattern are deeply embedded in AI training data.
Human arguments are messier. They acknowledge complications, backtrack to clarify, ask questions mid-argument, and sometimes end without a neat resolution. Adding this kind of structural unpredictability — a question that you do not immediately answer, an acknowledged counterargument, a pivot that changes direction — increases your text's uniqueness score.
